Spanish police arrested a ring of football match-fixers in the southwest region of Andalusia. The Guardia Civil website said they rounded up 34 people.
Sources said a goalie and a defender from Conil CF, a local team, got paid to throw games.
A coach and an ex-player from another team were running the show.
The other 30 bad guys included 6 active players from the third division and 24 people who were involved in laundering illegal income.
The probe kicked off in February 2022 after Conil CF bosses got suspicious and thought their players were in on match-fixing. Their players were playing poorly all the season.
As a result, the authorities found out that bets on Conil CF games were 6 times higher than usual for the division.
Earlier this year, the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported on suspicious sports events that happened in Q1 of 2023. Spain topped the list of countries with the most match-fixing cases.
