the European Union

As of January 1, 2025, Poland has taken the helm of the European Union (EU) Council Presidency and is spotlighting the rising threat of illegal gambling across member states. Sources close to Bloomberg revealed that Poland began urging its EU counterparts late last year to take collective action against unlicensed gambling operators.

On December 19, Poland drafted a document outlining its proposal, which estimates that tax authorities across the EU lose up to €7.2 ($7.42) billion annually due to unregulated gambling platforms.

To counteract this, Poland is advocating for the establishment of a new EU-wide task force on gambling under the European Commission’s guidance. The group would bring together national industry experts from member states.

“Such group would serve as a platform facilitating the exchange of experience, knowledge, good practices and ideas between Member States,” the proposal states. It further suggests leveraging AI-driven technologies as a unified approach to target illegal operators online.
