An analysis by the Department of Trust (DoT) reveals that British gamblers allocated around 11% of their leisure spending to gambling between April 1, 2023, and April 1, 2024, as reported by iGaming Business.
The study examined financial data from over 304,022 UK consumers who made at least one payment to licensed gambling operators during the year, excluding the National Lottery. Collectively, their gambling expenditures exceeded $185 million over the period.
On average, monthly gambling expenses accounted for 10.69% of entertainment budgets, translating to roughly $50 per player.
Comparatively, participants spent slightly more on subscriptions to media services ($58 or 12.29%), dining out ($56 or 11.81%), weekend outings ($55 or 11.67%), and food delivery ($54 or 11.37%).
According to DoT CEO and founder Charles Cohen, the data suggests that most UK players are generally doing so “as part of a healthy mix of different activities and socializing”.
However, the study also identified a group of high-spending gamblers, defined as individuals whose monthly betting expenditures exceeded $180. This cohort spent an average of $235 on gambling each month, representing 17% of their entertainment budget, making gambling their top leisure expense.
Meanwhile, many Brits actively work to curb gambling habits. Data from Monzo, a leading online bank, shows that its gambling-blocking feature helped users retain over $11 million in their accounts in 2024.
