Italian freestyle wrestler and two-time world champion, Frank Chamizo, has revealed a shocking offer of $300,000 to lose in an Olympic 2024 qualification tournament, as reported by Dev Discourse.
The tournament took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, where Chamizo competed against a local athlete. Despite a contentious decision by the judges that led to his loss, the most startling revelation came before the match.
Chamizo shared with journalists, “I knew that I had to give double, triple in Azerbaijan, because I was fighting in their country and they had bought everyone. So I want to say it, they came to me and offered me $300,000 to lose. I don’t want to say who but it happened on the morning of the weigh-in.” He firmly stated that he refused the offer.
It’s important to note that Chamizo didn’t just reject the offer to participate in a fixed match, but also pointed a finger at Azerbaijan, highlighting the corruption in the competition.
Chamizo, a multiple-time Olympic and European Games medalist, carries significant credibility with his allegations given his impressive track record.
In response to Chamizo’s accusations, the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation has dismissed them as baseless, calling the allegations that everything was bought absurd.
