In a recent operation, Iran’s Intelligence Ministry has shut down what is being called the largest illegal online gambling network targeting its citizens, with alleged links to operators based in the United Kingdom, as reported by Casino.org.

The ministry’s 14-month operation, dubbed ‘Nitro Bet’, uncovered the network’s extensive reach into Iran’s banking system.

The network, which ran over 50 websites, was involved in illegal gambling activities and managed around 35,000 domestic bank accounts and 1,200 payment gateways.

As a result of the crackdown, five individuals who managed the gambling operations within Iran have been arrested and are facing charges of running online gambling sites and acquiring money illegally.

Those who participated in the betting activities are also at risk of facing legal repercussions. In Iran, where gambling is strictly forbidden, penalties can include imprisonment or corporal punishment of 74 lashes.
