Former Dutch pro footballer Tom Beugelsdijk has joined a growing class action lawsuit against gambling operator Unibet, according to Casino Nieuws. The suit seeks the return of funds lost while betting on Unibet’s platform prior to 2021, before the Netherlands officially launched its regulated online gaming market.
But Beugelsdijk’s case goes beyond a payout. First, the former player wants Unibet to disclose exactly how much he lost between 2012 and 2021. As of early 2025, the operator stopped showing historical transaction data to players — a move that triggered Dutch advocacy group Gokverliesterug to file suit on behalf of roughly 20 users, including Beugelsdijk.
By his own estimate, the ex-Sparta Rotterdam defender may have lost close to €100,000. Still, he says he’s after clarity, not just compensation, and finds it baffling that Unibet won’t share basic account data.
“I want to know what I gambled away during that time. They just have to provide those documents. To me and to all those others. Everyone has the right to their personal data. I hope to be able to do something for all those others with this as well,” Beugelsdijk told the press.
Beugelsdijk’s gambling history has drawn scrutiny before. In 2021, he was investigated for allegedly picking up a yellow card on purpose as part of a betting scheme. While he was ultimately cleared of match-fixing, he was later suspended after it was confirmed he had placed bets on matches.
