A recent report by iNews sheds light on the financial ties between British Members of Parliament (MPs) and the country’s betting and racing industry. These MPs, who have vocally opposed stricter gambling regulations, collectively received £279,000 ($354,700) in funding since 2019.
The controversy centers around MPs who resisted government proposals to implement financial checks on gamblers. In return, they enjoyed perks beyond their parliamentary duties — tickets to major sporting events, cultural spectacles, and horse races. Among the invitations were passes to the Cheltenham Festival, the Brit Awards, and football matches at Wembley Stadium.
Crucially, these gifts and donations from the gambling industry were registered by the MPs, adhering to legal requirements. There is no suggestion of any illicit activity.
Here’s a breakdown of the top 10 betting and racing companies and their financial contributions to British lawmakers:
- Betting and Gaming Council — $163,500
- Entain — $94,000
- Tattersalls — $25,400
- The Jockey Club — $19,800
- Racecourse Association — $10,700
- Flutter — $9,400
- Arena Racing Company — $5,300
- Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club — $5,100
- Power Leisure Bookmakers — $4,900
- Gamesys — $3,900
Notably, Conservative Party MP Laurence Robertson emerged as the industry’s favored recipient, having received over $138,000 in gifts and donations since 2019.
This revelation comes on the heels of a survey that exposed a surprising statistic: one-fifth of UK gambling industry employees harbor embarrassment about their chosen profession.
