The Casablanca Court of Appeal has suspended a ruling ordering the blocking of foreign betting websites in Morocco, Moroccan outlet Médias24 reported.
The Commercial Court of Casablanca had previously instructed the country’s largest telecom operators — Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc and Inwi — to restrict access to offshore betting and online casino platforms operating without a local licence.
The order targeted, among others, 1xBet, Betwinner, Melbet, Linebet, Stake, Betway, Mostbet and Sportsbet.io, including their subdomains.
Telecom operators faced a fine of 10,000 Moroccan dirhams (approximately €925) per day for non-compliance.
The case was brought by the state-owned Marocaine des Jeux et des Sports (MDJS), which holds exclusive rights to organise sports betting in Morocco. Authorities argued that the blocking measure was aimed at protecting the regulated domestic market and curbing the activities of unlicensed operators.
On February 10, the Court of Appeal ordered a suspension of the blocking requirement pending further judicial review. The decision temporarily relieves telecom operators of the obligation to restrict access to offshore platforms, and daily fines will not be enforced during this period.
The court did not overturn the original ruling but suspended its implementation to allow additional examination of its legal grounds and potential impact on telecom operators and users.
The listed foreign betting sites remain accessible to players in Morocco for now. The final outcome will depend on the court’s subsequent decision.
