Afghanistan’s ruling authorities have officially banned chess, classifying it as a form of gambling that violates Islamic legal principles. As reported by Khaama Press, the move was initiated by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

The country’s sports administration confirmed that chess is now prohibited nationwide. Officials stated that the ban will remain in place until religious concerns are addressed and clarified by scholars.

Alongside the ban, the Ministry also dissolved the Afghan Chess Federation, claiming the organization was promoting an activity deemed “haram” (forbidden) under Sharia law.

Chess had gained traction in recent years as a common pastime in Afghanistan. Azizullah Gulzada, who owns a café in Kabul, told the BBC that informal tournaments at his venue regularly drew crowds. “Young people don’t have a lot of activities these days, so many came here everyday. They would have a cup of tea and challenge their friends to a game of chess,” said Gulzada.

The chess ban follows a broader trend. Last year, Afghan officials also prohibited mixed martial arts (MMA), citing the sport’s violent nature and incompatibility with Islamic teachings.
