Polymarket, a decentralized prediction market platform, is facing backlash for hosting numerous betting markets linked to California wildfires, NewsNation reports. Critics, including social media users and ethics experts, have called the practice unethical and even immoral, accusing the platform of exploiting a natural disaster.
Currently, the platform offers predictions on 17 different events directly or indirectly related to the tragedy in Los Angeles.
For example, Polymarket users can place bets on the date the fires will be contained and the total acreage burned.

Accepting bets on the consequences of an ecological catastrophe has raised eyebrows among social media users. They believe that attempting to profit from such predictions is unethical.
Some even argue that the ability to bet on such topics could potentially incentivize someone to commit arson to ensure their predictions come true.
Ethics specialists have echoed these sentiments. “My guess is that most people don’t like the idea of individuals betting on or making money off disasters and catastrophes,” said Nathanael Fast, director of the USC Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making.
Polymarket responded to the criticism by clarifying that it does not earn commissions from wildfire-related bets, arguing that user forecasts provide an “invaluable alternative information source for those seeking real-time quantitative data”.
“I have a hard time imagining that people are logging onto Polymarket to decide whether or not to evacuate,” commented Nathanael Fast, regarding the platform’s statement.
