Authorities in Pakistan raided an illegal camel fighting event in the outskirts of Muzaffargarh, Punjab province, disrupting an underground betting operation. According to the Associated Press of Pakistan, more than 40 people involved in organizing the event were taken into custody.
During the raid, police seized ten camels, two trucks, and a car, along with roughly $140 in cash used for wagering.
Those arrested were transported to the local police station, where they were formally charged with violating gambling laws. An ongoing investigation is underway.
Pakistan, an Islamic republic, has strict laws against all forms of gambling. Depending on the circumstances, those caught placing bets can face up to three years in prison or hefty fines.
For context, camel fighting involves two male camels competing — typically over a nearby female in heat. The practice is most common in Turkey, the Middle East, and South Asia.
