A leg in bet is an individual bet within a bigger bet, like a parlay (aka accumulator) or a system bet. These bets let you combine more than one pick (leg) into one mega bet, where each pick is a leg.
For example, a 4-leg parlay has four selections, and each of them is a leg.

The success of your bet relies on how many legs are correct. In a parlay, you have to nail all of them. In a system, you can handle some errors, but not too many.
The more legs you add, the bigger your potential payout – but also the lower your chances of winning.
How Does the Number of Legs Affect Winnings?
One of the most important factors to consider when placing a bet is the probability of each leg. For example, a leg with odds of 2.0 has a probability of 50% or 0.5.
To illustrate this point, let’s look at a table that shows the probability of winning with different numbers of legs, assuming that each leg has odds of 2.0.
Number of Legs | Probability of Winning |
1 | 50% |
2 | 25% |
3 | 12.5% |
4 | 6.25% |
5 | 3.125% |
✅ The more legs we combine, the greater the risk of losing.
So, imagine that you have a 3-leg parlay with odds of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0. The total odds are:
- Total Odds = 2.0×2.5×3.0=15.0
This means you can win $15 for every $1 you bet.
But what are the chances of that? To calculate the probability of your bet, you multiply the probabilities of each leg. For example, if you have a 3-leg parlay with probabilities of 0.5, 0.4, 0.333, the probability is:
- P = 0.5×0.4×0.333=0.0666
This means that you have a 6.66% chance of winning. And this is with a bookie’s zero margin.
Leg Count: How Many Do You Need
The number of legs you need for your accumulator depends on the type of bet and the bookie. Some bookies have a min and a max number of legs that you can include in your bet.
For example, Bet365 and Unibet caps accas at 12 legs, while DraftKings lets you go up to 20 legs.
The most common types of accumulators are:
What’s It Called? | How Many Legs? | What’s the Catch? |
Double | 2 | Simple and easy |
Treble | 3 | A bit more challenging |
Four-fold | 4 | Getting harder |
Five-fold | 5 | Even harder |
Six-fold | 6 | Very hard |
Seven-fold | 7 | Extremely hard |
Note: Some bets (like system bets) have 3+ legs that consist of different accumulators.
For example, Yankee Bet has 4 legs that make up 11 accumulators: 6 doubles (2-leg accumulators), 4 trebles (3-leg accumulators) and 1 four-fold (4-leg accumulator).
FAQs about a Leg in Betting
What is a leg in sports betting?
A leg is an individual bet that is part of a larger bet (like a parlay). For example, a four-leg parlay has four bets, and each of them is a leg.
How many legs can I include in a parlay?
The number of legs varies by bet type and bookmaker. For example, Bet365 has a 12-leg limit, while DraftKings has a 20-leg limit.
What are the conditions for a leg to win in a parlay?
A leg wins if you correctly predict the market (e.g., match result, total goals, etc.). To win the parlay, you need all legs to win. One wrong leg, and you lose.
