Powerball — $2.04 Billion

In November 2022, the American lottery Powerball had the biggest jackpot in history, worth a whopping $2.04 billion! The winner’s name — Edwin Castro from California — was revealed in February 2023. He chose the cash payout option, which amounted to $997.6 million (winners can also choose to receive the full amount in annual payments over 29 years).
Powerball — $1.586 Billion
In January 2016, Powerball awarded the first-ever billion-dollar jackpot — $1.586 billion. Three lucky players managed to guess the winning numbers and each decided to take the cash payout instead of annual payments. As a result, each winner took home $327.8 million!
The lottery generated a lot of buzz across the US, with ticket sales expected to reach $1.3 million per minute during evening rush hour.
Mega Millions — $1.537 Billion

In 2018, a lucky Mega Millions ticket buyer, another popular American lottery, hit a jackpot of $1.537 billion. The winner, who hails from South Carolina (where the ticket was also purchased), chose to remain anonymous. But the lottery officials did confirm that it was one person who won. The winner opted to receive the prize in a single lump sum, which was almost $878 million.
This jackpot still holds the record for the largest single-ticket win in Mega Millions history.
Mega Millions — $1.337 Billion

In July 2022, the Mega Millions jackpot was $1.337 billion. The lucky winners were two people who bought a single ticket each, but they decided to keep their identities under wraps. Instead, they opted for a lump-sum payment of $780.5 million, which is still a massive amount of money.
Mega Millions — $1.05 Billion

In January 2021, four Michigan residents split the Mega Millions jackpot of $1.05 billion. According to their representative, Kurt Penhaus, one of the winners was reminded to buy their tickets when they saw a sign that the jackpot had climbed to $1 billion. After taxes were paid, the lucky winners received a lump sum of around $557 million.

Europe’s most popular lottery, EuroMillions, has seen some huge payouts as well. The biggest jackpot ever won was €230 million, which was scooped up by a lucky winner in the UK in July 2022. The winner chose to remain anonymous, but it’s safe to say that their life will never be the same again!
