Survey: Over 70% of Swedes Participate in Gambling

Research firm Enkätfabriken conducted a gambling participation survey in Sweden on behalf of the national regulator Spelinspektionen in November 2024. More than 1,600 people took part in the study.
The results showed that 71% of respondents had engaged in gambling over the past year, with 33% placing bets or playing games on a weekly basis. According to Spelinspektionen, these figures remain largely unchanged from 2023.
Lotteries continue to be the most popular form of gambling in Sweden, with 84% of players favoring them as their primary choice.
Sports betting ranks second at 19%, while bingo comes in third at 14%. Casino games attracted interest from 12% of those surveyed.
Among Swedish sports bettors, the most popular betting markets were:
- Football — 75% placed wagers on matches
- Hockey — 44% placed wagers on games
- Tennis — 8% placed wagers on matches
- Basketball — 8% placed wagers on games
- Esports — 7% placed wagers on events
Additionally, 38% of bettors had placed wagers on horse racing.
Spelinspektionen also noted that 66% of Swedes are aware of the self-exclusion option through Spelpaus.se. Meanwhile, 71% of respondents believe gambling companies take responsibility for addressing social issues linked to the industry.
