Brazil’s Serie A league is facing allegations of match-fixing in at least 6 matches played in 2022, as reported by ESPN. Fernando Cesconetto, the prosecutor of Goiás state, shared this information during a press conference dedicated to investigating sports outcome manipulation.

Cesconetto said that the investigation started with three matches in November 2022 and later widened to 11 matches, including some from lower leagues.

Reports suggest that players were offered between $10,000 and $20,000 to perform certain actions during the matches, such as receiving yellow cards and giving out corner kicks.

The criminals behind the match-fixing scheme profited by wagering at betting sites.

In response, Brazilian authorities conducted raids and interrogations of several footballers in 16 cities across six states.

This isn’t the first time match-fixing has been uncovered in Brazilian football. Earlier this year, Sportradar identified a case of match-fixing in the Tocantins state championship.
