French authorities apprehended two professional scammers on the night of July 28-29, renowned for their illicit activities in European casinos, as disclosed by Franceinfo.
The individuals under arrest, a 63-year-old Ukrainian and a 37-year-old Latvian, had been orchestrating elaborate scams that yielded substantial sums of money during their visits to various casinos. To combat this fraudulent behavior, the casino management initiated a discreet surveillance operation to closely monitor the suspects’ actions.
While the specifics of the scam are still unfolding, the fraudulent technique employed by the duo has been characterized as exceptionally ‘complex’.
The scammers employed a microscopic earpiece, so small it required a magnet for extraction, to receive coded information from accomplices outside the casino.
They also utilized a phone with a side-facing camera during poker sessions, allegedly allowing them to view the dealer’s cards in real-time.
“This case should prompt casinos to take measures to ensure this type of cheating never happens again,” said Stéphane Piallat, head of the Central Racing and Gaming Service (SCCJ) at the national directorate of the judicial police (DNPJ).
