The Jeju Dream Tower resort, a hotspot for gaming on South Korea’s Jeju Island, is looking to hire 500 new workers — 400 of them for its casino floor.
The reason? China has lifted its ban on group tours to South Korea, which had been in place for years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, Chinese tourists are pouring into Jeju Island.
According to GGR Asia, the resort currently has about 2,200 employees, but only 600 of them work in the casino section. The resort wants to increase that number to 1,000, as well as add another 100 staff for hotel operations.
The statistics show how big of a deal this is for Jeju Island. In June, 35,907 Chinese visitors arrived on the island, compared to only 628 in the same month last year.
And that’s not all. Out of the 64,000 total tourists who visited Jeju in June this year, 50% of them were Chinese. That means that China is a huge market for the island’s tourism industry.
But there’s a catch. The casino at the Jeju Dream Tower resort is off-limits to South Koreans. They can only gamble at one place in the country: the Kangwon Land resort in the mountains.
