Indonesian authorities temporarily blocked TikTok after discovering gambling-related donations and online casino content during live streams. In September, Minister of Communication and Digital Technology Meutya Hafid stated that streamers promoting gambling “encourage violence and anarchy” in the country.
The ministry demanded that TikTok provide full details on broadcasts and monetization sources during the nationwide protests between August 25 and 30, 2025. When the company failed to immediately supply all the required information, its operating license was suspended.
The platform’s restrictions were lifted a day later, after TikTok submitted the requested data and held consultations with regulators. The suspension lasted from October 3 to 4.
The move came amid heightened government scrutiny of digital platforms following recent mass protests. With around 150 million active users, Indonesia remains one of TikTok’s largest global markets, prompting stricter enforcement of local content rules.
Even during the suspension, the app remained technically accessible, though it was not legally authorized to operate until regulatory conditions were met.
