Hackers have hijacked more than 300 Indian government websites and plastered them with links to online casinos and cricket betting sites, Gateway to Gaming reported.

The cyber crooks are believed to be based in neighboring countries like Pakistan, Thailand, and Indonesia.

The attack affected various official sites, such as the Department of Biotechnology, UNESCO India, and the Agricultural Research Department, to name a few.

The report said that clicking on the hackers’ links would take users to a page where they could top up their accounts on an illegal gambling site. The hackers preferred cryptocurrency as the payment option.

Indian authorities have warned the public to be careful and close the pages as soon as they see them.

The report also stressed that this attack shows how weak the government websites are and how they need better cybersecurity to protect them.

This is not the first time hackers have targeted the gambling industry. Earlier, it was revealed that hackers stole user data from the Ohio state lottery.
