Europe’s leading gambling regulators have signed an unprecedented agreement to jointly combat illegal online operators, iGaming Today reports. The move comes as unlicensed platforms continue to expand faster than national laws can keep up.
The initiative, agreed during a meeting in Madrid, brings together authorities from Germany, Austria, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
Regulators acknowledged that no single country can effectively counter transnational networks that easily cross borders and lure users through social media and affiliate programmes.
“This creates a dangerous vacuum, especially for young people who are left without any protection,” experts noted.
The new strategy is built around three core pillars:
- sharing intelligence on illegal operators and their methods;
- coordinating complaints to social media platforms over illicit advertising;
- jointly developing best practices for detecting and stopping violations.
The aim of the alliance is to establish a unified defensive front against operators who evade oversight in one jurisdiction and continue operating in another.
