FIFA is conducting a confidential investigation into suspected match-fixing in Trinidad and Tobago’s domestic championship, Caribbean National Weekly (CNW) reported. According to the outlet, FIFA representatives are already in the country and have begun questioning players.
The probe is being carried out in a closed, largely confidential manner, with no official statements or public comment. Those within the local football community are aware of the probe, with the information confirmed by league officials and club representatives.
The names of the FIFA officials involved in the investigation have not been disclosed.
Officials said player interviews are already under way. The process is being conducted privately, given the sensitive nature of the allegations, and to avoid interfering with the investigation.
Concerns over match-fixing in the local league have surfaced repeatedly in recent years. Football insiders have pointed to potential manipulation of results, though such claims have not led to a full-scale investigation.
In 2023, former head coach of Guaya United, Travis Mulraine, said he had removed five players from his squad over suspicions of involvement in match-fixing. He added that the football association had requested evidence at the time, but did not initiate a formal inquiry.
The situation has escalated in recent days, with videos circulating online that appear to show deliberate mistakes and unusual actions by certain players, further fuelling suspicions of result manipulation.
Additional concern has been raised by reports of suspicious betting activity. Club representatives said that, on certain matchdays, bookmakers may have reportedly suspended markets due to irregular or unusually large wagers, often regarded as a potential indicator of match-fixing.
The investigation is unfolding amid a tight title race in the top division. Defence Force Elite remains the league leader and is close to retaining its title. In the final round, the team will face AC Port of Spain. Closely behind is Club Sando, one point adrift, which will play Eagles in its last match of the season.
Gambling Park notes that all FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will, for the first time, have a single official betting data supplier.
