Dutch Casino Offers to Refund Players’ Losses for First Time

Dutch online casino LuckyCasino has taken the unusual step of offering former players partial refunds for losses incurred before the Netherlands’ regulated online gambling market opened, CasinoNieuws reported. The offer applies to users who played on the site between 2018 and 2021.

The company sent letters to former customers inviting them to apply for a refund. Each message sets out a specific refund amount, but does not explain how that figure was calculated.

The offer comes with a notable condition: players must have an account with OneCasino, a licensed online casino in the Netherlands, to receive the money. Former LuckyCasino players who do not have such an account are being asked to register.

OneCasino was acquired in 2024 by Glitnor Group, which later changed its name to LCKY Group. The same group also owns LuckyCasino. The LuckyCasino brand no longer operates in the Netherlands, but remains active in other countries.

What makes the case unusual is that the casino proactively contacted former customers and offered them money. Such payments usually follow a different route: players file claims against operators that accepted bets before the launch of the regulated market and seek to recover their losses through the courts.

For LuckyCasino, the voluntary outreach may be a way to limit legal exposure.

Dutch courts have already sided with players in some cases, ordering online casinos to repay losses from periods when they operated without a local licence.

Some of those cases have reached the appeal stage, while the Dutch Supreme Court has yet to issue a definitive ruling.

The offer also has another notable feature: to receive the payment, former players are effectively being directed to another platform owned by the same group. As a result, the arrangement could be seen not only as an attempt to settle potential claims in advance, but also as a way to bring former LuckyCasino customers to the licensed online casino OneCasino.
