The Swedish self-exclusion register for problem gamblers (Spelpaus) which kicked off on January 1, 2019, has now hit an impressive milestone of 100,000 registrations, Gambling Insider reports.

To put this in perspective, Sweden’s population is around 10.42 million people. So, roughly 1 in a 100 Swedes is struggling with some form of gambling addiction. This statistic only counts those players who have recognized their problem and taken steps to join the Spelpaus register.

The register offers different options for self-exclusion: one, three, or six months, or indefinitely with a minimum of 12 months.

The ban applies to sports betting, casinos, lotteries, and betting pools. Once a gambler signs up for the register, they can’t change their mind and go back to gambling.
