Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined just €255 for leaving the Portugal national team camp without permission, Reuters reports.
The dispute began after Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway on September 27. Ronaldo spent the entire game on the bench, despite claiming that head coach Jorge Jesus had promised him playing time. The manager even sent Ronaldo to warm up but ultimately left him out of the match.
Jesus, however, denied making any such promises. On September 30, the 41-year-old striker left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of the match against Denmark.
The Portuguese Football Federation ruled that Ronaldo’s actions constituted a breach of discipline.
The striker received the minimum suspension of 30 days. However, 19 days have already been counted towards his ban, meaning he will be eligible to return to the national team in November.
The size of the fine is perhaps the most striking part of the story. According to Forbes estimates, Ronaldo is expected to earn around $300 million during the 2026/27 season. That works out at approximately $822,000 a day, $34,000 an hour and $571 a minute.
In other words, Ronaldo earns the equivalent of his €255 fine in roughly 30 seconds — about as long as it might take him to tie his football boots before training.
Ronaldo has already apologised to fans and teammates and confirmed that he is ready to return to international duty once his suspension ends.
