Infantino Under Pressure as 100,000 Back Complaint Over Trump Ties

More than 100,000 people have backed a complaint against FIFA President Gianni Infantino accusing him of abusing his position and violating the organization’s principle of political neutrality, The Guardian reports.

The complaint was launched by the Reboot FIFA campaign and advocacy group Fair Square. Reboot FIFA was launched ahead of the 2026 World Cup and calls for greater transparency in FIFA’s leadership. Organizers describe it as the largest complaint ever submitted to FIFA’s Ethics Committee.

The campaigners argue that Infantino’s actions may amount to an abuse of power, a breach of his duty to remain politically neutral and the use of his position to strengthen his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The complaint raises several concerns, including:

the review of U.S. forward Folarin Balogun’s sending-off at the World Cup;
FIFA awarding Trump its Peace Prize;
Infantino’s involvement in the U.S. president’s “Board of Peace” initiative;
Infantino’s remarks about working with Trump “to make not only America, but the whole world better.”

The complaint also raises concerns over the FIFA Forward Enterprise project. FIFA had planned to create a separate commercial entity to manage some of the rights associated with its major tournaments. The initiative drew criticism over transparency concerns and became one of the points of tension between FIFA and UEFA.

“The fact that 100,000 people have signed this call for accountability shows growing public concern,” Fair Square said in a letter.

FIFA said it viewed the campaign as an attempt to undermine confidence in the organization and its president. The governing body said leadership matters should be addressed through FIFA’s formal democratic processes rather than through accusations and speculation.

FIFA previously confirmed that Infantino intends to seek a fourth and final term as president in next year’s election. UEFA, meanwhile, has called on him to resign.
