A new survey by the British charity organization GamCare shows how problem gamblers are throwing away their Christmas savings.

The survey found that 44% of problem gamblers use the money they saved for Christmas gifts to bet instead. What’s more, half of them feel anxious and depressed before the holiday because of their addiction and its effects.

On top of that, the survey also revealed that 41% of respondents said gambling addiction keeps them from spending Christmas with their loved ones.

GamCare reps said the pre-Christmas season is especially risky for problem gamblers for two reasons:

  1. First, they get their December paychecks earlier than usual, so they have to stretch their money for over a month. That’s hard for gamblers who can’t resist spending.
  2. Second, there are lots of tempting deals and offers before New Year and Christmas, and the gambling industry is no different. So gamblers who can’t control themselves have a high chance of losing all their money and ending up broke.
