Amid the ongoing investigation into West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reinforced his unwavering stance on football players involved in sports betting. As reported by iGaming Brazil, Infantino addressed questions from journalists, emphasizing the governing body’s zero-tolerance policy.
The Football Association (FA) recently charged Lucas Paquetá with alleged violations of sports integrity related to betting. The FA claims that the Brazilian player intentionally received yellow cards in multiple matches to gain an advantage in his wagers.
“The players know: obviously, they should not bet. In football, in rugby, in any sport. When something happens, there are obviously investigations and very serious, very stringent decisions are made regarding betting. And football, at all levels, including amateur,” commented the president of FIFA.
Infantino’s strong words leave no room for doubt: players found guilty of violating betting rules will face severe consequences.
Previously, he warned that match-fixing poses a significant threat to the very existence of football.
