Casino.org reports that a casino in Macau lost $200,000 to a group of scammers who used fake chips and cashed them out.
The local police said that the scammers used chips that were worth 100 Hong Kong dollars ($13), but changed them to look like they were worth 10,000 Hong Kong dollars ($13,000).
The police found 33 fake chips in total.
It is also said that all the scammers were from mainland China. Currently, the police have arrested 8 of them, but one is still on the run. The casino’s dealer helped crack the case, spotting that some of the chips were slightly different from the real ones.
The police said that most of the fake chips were exact copies of the casino’s real chips, and that the fraudsters probably got them from the darknet. They noted that it’s pretty easy to get such good fakes online these days.
This is not the first time this happened in Macau. In August last year, another casino lost $700,000 to scammers with fake chips.
