UK bookmakers expect a sharp increase in betting volumes in the coming days amid a series of major sporting events, including the Grand National horse race, The Masters golf tournament and English Premier League matches. Total stakes could reach £1 billion (€1.15 billion), the Daily Star reported, citing industry representatives.
Most of the activity is expected to be centred on the three-day racing festival in Aintree, which begins on April 9. Bookmakers estimate it could account for at least £650 million (€745 million) in bets.
In the UK alone, around £250 million (€287 million) is expected to be wagered on the festival’s headline race, the Grand National.
The Jockey Club, which organises the event, said the festival attracts both regular bettors and occasional participants.
According to the organisation, around 8 million people in the UK are expected to place bets on the Grand National.
The festival dates back to the 19th century and is considered one of the country’s most popular sporting events. Up to 600 million viewers across 170 countries are expected to follow the race, while more than 130,000 spectators are set to attend the Aintree racecourse over the three days.
Additional betting volume is also expected on upcoming Premier League fixtures, including Arsenal’s home match against Bournemouth on April 11 and Manchester City’s away game at Chelsea on April 12.
Bookmakers are also reporting strong interest in The Masters, which will take place in Augusta, Georgia, from April 9 to 12. Defending champion Rory McIlroy will be aiming to defend his title, while two-time winner Scottie Scheffler is considered his main rival.

Industry representatives noted that during peak periods — particularly ahead of major events such as the Grand National — betting activity can reach up to 100,000 bets per minute.
Gambling Park previously reported a decline in interest among UK bookmakers in horse racing following the introduction of affordability checks.
