Legal Sports Betting Handle in the U.S. Topped $150bn for the First Time

The volume of legal sports betting in the United States surpassed $150 billion for the first time in 2025, despite the fact that part of the reporting for the year has yet to be published in several states, InGame.com reported.
For comparison, total sports betting handle in U.S. states with legal sports betting amounted to $149.7 billion in 2024. The 2025 figure has already exceeded last year’s level and is expected to rise further once the remaining state data is released.
New York remained the largest sports betting market in the United States in 2025.
According to the New York State Gaming Commission, total handle in the state reached $26.3 billion, accounting for 17.5% of all known wagering in U.S. states with legal sports betting. December handle in New York totaled $2.4 billion. Sports betting operators in the state generated $1.96 billion in revenue for the full year, while tax receipts totaled $1.32 billion.
In addition to New York, Illinois and New Jersey ranked among the largest U.S. sports betting markets by handle in 2025. Available data show that wagering volume in Illinois exceeded $12.5 billion, while New Jersey recorded more than $11.1 billion. Ohio and Pennsylvania also ranked within the top five states by betting handle.
