Hawaii Senator Ronald Kouchi is pushing for the legalization of online gambling in the state.
The proposed bill would create the Hawaii Gaming Control Commission (HGCC), which would be in charge of choosing a single operator for a 10-year renewable license, with an emphasis on regulatory simplicity.
The HGCC would also have to deal with the problem of offshore operators that have been serving state residents for a long time.
The legalization would only cover sports betting and online poker, while online casinos would still be banned.
The House of Representatives hasn’t scheduled a hearing for the bill yet, but the state might speed things up because it needs more money after the forest fires in 2023.
