The Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission has suspended purchases of US-made gaming equipment, including slot machines and video lottery terminals. According to InterGame Online, other Canadian provinces are expected to follow Alberta’s lead in restricting imports of American gaming machines.

The move comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s trade policy, which imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian imports.

In retaliation, Canada introduced its own 25% duties on American goods. While some of these tariffs won’t take effect until April 2, Alberta has already acted on the escalating trade dispute between North America’s two largest economies.

Consulting firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming warns the standoff could have a negative impact on gaming equipment manufacturers.

Canada’s gaming machine market sees annual sales of roughly 15,000 units, with major players including:

  • IGT (UK) – 45% market share
  • Light & Wonder (US) – 20%
  • Aristocrat (Australia) – 18%
  • Konami (Japan) – 6%
  • AGS (US) – 3%
  • Ainsworth (US) – 3%
  • Everi (US) – 3%

Eilers & Krejcik Gaming estimates the ban on US-made gaming machines will remain in place until new trade terms are negotiated between the US and Canada.
