Brazil’s Senate Sports Commission has backed a bill that would tighten restrictions on gambling advertising, according to an official update posted on the legislature’s website.
The proposal includes a nationwide ban on gambling ads during live sports broadcasts and prohibits the use of celebrities or public figures to promote betting platforms.
The only exception would apply to retired athletes who ended their professional careers at least five years ago.
Under the bill, gambling advertisements would be restricted to evening hours, airing only between 7:30 p.m. and midnight across television, streaming platforms, social media, and online channels. All other time slots would be off-limits for gambling-related content.
The bill also calls for similar time restrictions on gambling ads aired on radio.
In addition, all gambling advertisements would be required to carry a responsible gambling warning. The mandated message would read: “Gambling causes addiction and harm to you and your family.”
The legislation, having passed through the Senate committee, will now go to a full Senate vote. If approved, it will proceed to the Chamber of Deputies for further consideration.
