A Ukrainian refugee has won €500,000 ($540,000) in the Belgian national lottery, the lottery officials announced on Monday.
The man spent €5 on a scratch card last month at a gas station, turning his investment into a 100,000-fold return.
The winner, whose identity remains unknown (according to Belgian lottery rules), is between 18 and 24 and has been living in Brussels for the past year.
“He has mixed feelings (about winning). It is a difficult period to be happy with everything happening in his home country”, said Joke Vermoere, spokesperson for the National Lottery.
Vermoere added that the generous winner wants to share his good fortune with others. He plans to throw a party for his pals and supporters in Belgium. He also wants to donate some money to his fellow Ukrainians.
