The University of Notre Dame in Indiana has taken the decision to suspend its men’s swimming program for a full academic year following revelations of student-athletes engaging in betting on their own competitions.
Despite the legality of sports betting in Indiana, the absence of licensed sportsbooks offering wagers on collegiate swimming events did not deter members of the Notre Dame swim team from organizing their own betting scheme centered around their races.
Reports from ESPN shed light on the student-athletes’ creation of a personalized betting operation, enabling them to place bets on various markets including Total Over/Under times for specific distances in the races.
Shockingly, over 60% of the 25 athletes comprising the Notre Dame swim team were implicated in this illicit betting endeavor, a clear breach of the strict regulations set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
In light of these findings, Notre Dame has taken decisive action by suspending the men’s swimming team for the upcoming academic year as a consequence of the NCAA rules violation.
Importantly, the university’s internal investigation concluded that neither the coaching staff nor team personnel were complicit in or aware of the students’ unauthorized betting activities.
