With Donald Trump Jr. stepping in as a strategic advisor, prediction market platform Kalshi is making moves into sports betting. According to Next.io, the platform has filed for approval with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to offer sports wagering.

Kalshi has already introduced prediction markets for the current NFL season, with plans to expand into the NBA, NHL, and NCAA events.

However, one potential hurdle is the legal betting age. While Kalshi allows users as young as 18, most states set the minimum age for legal sports betting at 21.

This age gap could complicate CFTC approval, even though Kalshi technically doesn’t operate as a traditional sportsbook. Instead, users buy shares in possible outcomes, with payouts based on correct predictions.

It’s unclear whether Trump Jr.’s involvement directly influenced Kalshi’s expansion into sports, but CEO Tarek Mansour has previously called him a forward-thinking leader who understands “what the American people want”.
