Irish fighter Conor McGregor believes all bets placed on his UFC 329 bout against American Max Holloway should be refunded. He made the statement in a post on Instagram.
“The fight should be ruled a no contest and all bets refunded,” McGregor wrote.
The Irishman added that the results of medical tests on his injured leg would be known later. However, he did not explain why the nature of the injury should provide grounds for overturning the official result.
The bout took place in Las Vegas overnight from July 11 to 12. Early in the first round, McGregor attempted a jumping kick, landed awkwardly and injured his right knee. The referee stopped the fight after one minute and nine seconds, awarding Holloway a technical-knockout victory.
The outcome proved highly profitable for bookmakers. At DraftKings, for example, 68% of all bets were placed on McGregor to win, accounting for 92% of the total money wagered.
Given how favorable the result was for sportsbooks, they are unlikely to voluntarily follow McGregor’s call and refund bettors.
