Asian handicap +0.25 and -0.25 (aka split handicap) is a quarter-goal bet that combines two handicaps, handicap 0.5 and handicap 0, and divides your wager between them.
For example, if you place a $100 bet on Asian handicap (+0, +0.5), you’re essentially getting a +0.25 handicap, split like this:
- 50% goes to (+0.5)
- 50% goes to (+0)
This dynamic approach to betting can lead to 4 different scenarios: win, lose, half-win, or half-lose.

Heads Up: the result is usually settled at the end of regular time. Extra time and penalties? They typically don’t count. So, before you place your hard-earned cash on that bet, always check with your bookie.
How Does Handicap +0.25/-0.25 Work?
• Positive Asian handicap +0.25: This means that the team you’re rooting for kicks off the game with a quarter-goal lead. If they win, your bet wins. If the match ends in a draw, half of your stake is returned, and the other half is considered a win, resulting in a “half-win” situation.
• Negative Asian handicap -0.25: This implies that the team you’re backing enters the game with a quarter-goal shortfall. They need to turn the tables and win the game for your wager to win.
Line | Team Result | Wager Result | Line | Team Result | Wager Result |
+0.25 | Win | Win | -0.25 | Win | Win |
Draw | Half-Win (win 50%, refund 50%) | Draw | Half-Lose (lose 50%, refund 50%) | ||
Lose | Lose | Lose | Lose |
Note: The sign (+ or -) before the number indicates which team has the advantage or disadvantage. The number (0.25) shows the size of the edge.
A Real-Life Scenario of Handicap +0.25/-0.25 in Football
Let’s say you’re betting on a football match between Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. You decide to place a $200 bet on Leipzig with an Asian handicap of +0.25. The betting odds are 2.5. Your $200 bet is split into two:
- Half of your bet ($100) goes on the 0-line.
- The other half ($100) goes on the 0.5-line.
Now, let’s look at the different scenarios:
Team Result | Handicap (+0) | Handicap (+0.5) | Handicap (+0.25) | Winnings |
Win | Win | Win | Win | $500 |
Draw | Money Back | Win | Half-Win | $350 |
Lose | Lose | Lose | Lose | $0 |
If RB Leipzig wins – both parts of your bet win. So, each of your $100 bets at 2.5 odds grows into $250, adding up to a tidy sum of $500.
But let’s consider another scenario: Leipzig puts up a fierce fight but the match ends in a draw. While it might seem like a setback, it’s not a complete loss for you. The 0-line handicap might not have worked out and you get that $100 back, but the 0.5-line bet is a winner, netting you $250.
