Scene of the train crash in Toledo province, Spain
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced the postponement of all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, following a deadly train collision in Spain’s Toledo province.
Earlier on Wednesday, approximately 150 kilometers south of Madrid, a high-speed passenger train operated by Spain’s state-owned rail company Renfe collided with a stationary train belonging to private operator Iryo. Several carriages derailed in the collision. The two trains were carrying a total of 544 passengers.
According to the latest figures from regional authorities, at least 64 people have been killed and 108 injured. High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended.
The federation postponed the matches as a mark of respect and solidarity with the victims and their families. All other matches scheduled for the day in competitions organized by the RFEF have also been postponed.
Five top-flight clubs were among the teams due to play in the postponed Copa del Rey fixtures: Levante, Alavés, Valencia, Celta Vigo and Real Betis. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are scheduled to enter the competition later, in the round of 32. Real Madrid and Barcelona have already expressed their condolences to the families of those killed and their support for the injured.
Matches scheduled for Thursday, October 29, remain on the calendar for now. The federation will announce new dates and kickoff times for the postponed fixtures at a later stage.
