Men’s Health, the popular U.S. magazine, has done a survey on sports betting trends among men in the U.S. The survey looked at not only the usual factors, like age, favorite sports, and how into it they are, but also the race of the bettors.
The survey asked 3800 men, of whom 1500 said they had placed bets at least once in the past year.
Men’s Health researchers found that the main age group of male bettors is millennials — those born roughly from 1981 to 1996. Among them, African Americans are more likely to bet than other racial groups. The survey did not include mixed-race individuals, such as Latino Americans, Asian Americans, and others.
However, Men’s Health journalists think that the typical bettor in the US is a white American aged 25 to 34.
The survey also revealed that most of this bettors (80%) spend up to 6 hours a day on betting activities. They are mostly concentrated in states like California, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.
When it comes to betting preferences, the survey showed that 76% of bettors prefer online betting over land-based bookmakers, and the top 3 sports they bet on are soccer, basketball, and baseball. Most bettors (56%) bet on professional sports events, but a sizable number (39%) also bet on college games.
The respondents’ favorite betting brands were no surprise — the top 3 largest gambling operators in the US market: 61% choose DraftKings for their betting, 56% go with FanDuel, and about a third pick BetMGM (the survey apparently allowed the respondents to choose more than one brand).
Despite their passion for betting, many bettors (34%) said they find sportsbook ads during broadcasts annoying, and 38% said they would rather have no ads at all.
