Prediction market platform Polymarket has introduced new user protection measures, CNN reports. The tools are similar to responsible gambling features used by licensed gambling operators.
Polymarket calls the system “Responsible trading.” It includes:
- deposit limits;
- temporary or permanent self-exclusion;
- support for users showing signs of problematic behavior.
Polymarket’s Head of Trust and Safety, Malea Otranto, said the company would monitor how users interact with the new tools and adjust them if necessary.
The move comes amid ongoing debates over how prediction markets should be regulated in the US. These platforms are legally classified as financial markets and operate under federal oversight from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). As a result, they are not subject to the same state-level player protection requirements that apply to licensed sportsbooks and casinos.
At the same time, a significant share of Polymarket’s activity is linked to sports. According to data from TickerTracker, sports markets accounted for more than 98% of trading volume on the US version of the platform in September.
Polymarket Deputy Chief Legal Officer Olivia Chalos acknowledged that the new measures resemble tools used by sportsbooks.
However, she emphasized that Polymarket’s business model is different and that additional safeguards are needed, including for users who are entering prediction markets for the first time.
Polymarket introduced the new tools shortly after New York authorities filed a lawsuit against the platform. The state is seeking to stop Polymarket from operating in New York, alleging that the company bypasses local gambling regulations. Polymarket denies the allegations and has filed a counterclaim in federal court.
