FlightAware Sues Kalshi Over Flight-Cancellation Betting Markets

U.S. flight-tracking service FlightAware has sued prediction market platform Kalshi over its use of FlightAware data for markets tied to flight cancellations, Reuters reports.
In July, Kalshi launched markets allowing users to predict the number or percentage of canceled flights.
The platform listed FlightAware as its primary data source for determining the outcomes of those contracts.
FlightAware, however, says it never gave Kalshi permission to use its data or name for that purpose.
The company also argues that references to FlightAware on Kalshi’s market pages could have led users to believe that the flight-tracking service was affiliated with Kalshi or involved in offering the markets.
FlightAware is asking the court to bar Kalshi from using its data, name and trademarks in connection with the markets and is also seeking damages. The amount sought has not been disclosed.
Kalshi’s flight-cancellation markets have previously drawn criticism in the United States.
Critics have raised concerns that allowing people to profit from widespread flight cancellations could, at least in theory, create a financial incentive to disrupt airline or airport operations.
