Petru-Alexandru Luncanu

Petru-Alexandru Luncanu, a 34-year-old Romanian tennis player, has been hit with a 5-year ban for match-fixing by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

Luncanu broke the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP) rules multiple times in 2017 and 2021. Besides rigging matches, the player has been accused of directly or indirectly facilitating tennis betting.

Moreover, the player did not fully cooperate with the ITIA investigation, backing out of letting them analyze his phone when they asked.

It is noted the banned player has denied any wrongdoing.

The ban effectively ends Luncanu’s career as he is prohibited from playing, coaching, or attending any tennis events sanctioned by the sport’s governing bodies.

The ITIA press release stated that Luncanu’s ban will last until June 8, 2028. Given his age, he may have to hang up his racket for good. He also faces a $40,000 fine.
