Kalshi Bans Gubernatorial Candidate and MrBeast Employee for Insider Trading

Prediction market platform Kalshi has for the first time publicly disclosed sanctions imposed on traders found to have used insider information, Blockhead reported.

The platform had not previously released details of such cases. Over the past year, Kalshi has opened around 200 investigations into potential violations, with more than a dozen progressing to formal proceedings. The two completed cases mark the first instances the company has disclosed publicly.

The first case involved a candidate for governor of California. He placed trades totaling about $200 on his own victory and later referenced the bets on social media.

Kalshi’s monitoring systems flagged the activity as suspicious, leading to the suspension of the account and the launch of an investigation. The candidate was subsequently banned from trading for five years and fined 10 times the value of the trades. The company said he later withdrew from the gubernatorial race and ran for Congress. His name has not been disclosed in the platform’s public statements.

The second case concerns Artem Kaptur, an editor who worked with YouTuber MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson.

Kaptur placed approximately $4,000 in bets on markets linked to streaming content. Kalshi said its systems detected near-flawless trading at low odds, which it described as statistically anomalous. An investigation found that the trader had access to non-public information. He was banned for two years and fined five times the amount of his trades.

Both cases were referred to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which regulates Kalshi. The company also announced the creation of an independent oversight committee that will publish quarterly reports on identified violations and cases referred to regulators.
