The Finnish police are on the case of a shady advertising scheme by the Estonian bookie OlyBet during the Ice Hockey World Championship, Iltalehti reports.
The Finnish police got wind of a shady ad scheme by OlyBet on May 29th. They found out that the Latvian national team was rocking OlyBet’s name on their jerseys in the tournament that took place in Latvia and Finland.
Finland has a strict ban on gambling ads, except for the state-run monopoly, Veikkaus.
But OlyBet thought they were slick. They added the words “Sports Bar” next to their name on the jerseys (in fine print, of course).
However, OlyBet runs some restaurants with the same name in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. So technically, they were promoting their restaurants, not their gambling site.
The Finnish cops are scratching their heads over this one. They’ve never dealt with a criminal case like this before, said Arto Partanen, the commissioner of criminal investigations.
