As Gambling-Park.com reported earlier, a VIP customer of Aspinall’s casino in London had a costly night out in February 2016. Lester Hui went to the club to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a lot of booze and baccarat. He ordered 11 bottles of pricey drinks and played baccarat with high stakes. But his luck ran out quickly: he lost £400,000 ($510,000) in 20 minutes — and a total of £589,724 ($750,000) by the end of the night.
But Lester did not want to pay his dues. He claimed that he was too drunk to gamble sensibly (he drank several bottles of wine and champagne, as well as 5 to 10 shots of “Maotai”, a strong Chinese liquor), accusing the casino staff of serving him more alcohol than he could handle.
Furthermore, Mr Hui said that the casino staff ignored his request to limit his bets to £30,000.
Aspinall’s casino was not buying his excuses. They sued Lester in a London court, demanding that he pay his debt in full.
On August 4, 2023, the judge ruled in favor of the casino, ordering Lester to pay the full amount of his debt.
The judge said that Lester’s story was full of holes: he was not as drunk as he claimed, since he drove 20 miles (32 km) home that night. Besides, there was no evidence that he drank “Maotai”, a strong Chinese liquor, or that the casino staff pressured him to drink more. The judge concluded that Lester made his own choices and had to face the consequences.
Now Lester and Aspinall’s casino have to figure out how he will pay back what he owes.
