26 Players From Same Portuguese Club Charged Over Prohibited Betting

The Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation has charged 26 players who represented Portimonense during the 2025/26 season with violating betting regulations. According to the charges, some of them placed bets on their own team to lose. The case was reported by Portuguese newspaper Record.

Midfielder Nuno Pereira is accused of placing 1,536 bets.

Of the 195 bets he allegedly placed on matches in Portugal’s fourth division, 22 involved Portimonense. In 18 of those cases, Pereira bet on his own team to lose.

Goalkeeper Rodrigo Carvalho is another notable case. He is accused of placing 915 bets.

Of those, 211 were on fourth-division matches, including 32 involving Portimonense. In 20 cases, Carvalho allegedly bet on his own team to lose.

All 26 players named in the case represented Portimonense during the 2025/26 season. The club competed in Portugal’s fourth tier that year and was relegated at the end of the campaign to the fifth level, the regional Algarve League 1.

However, not all of the players involved remain with Portimonense. The group includes players who are still at the club, others who moved elsewhere during the summer, and some who had already left earlier. As part of its preparations for the new season, Portimonense also promoted several youth players to the senior squad and brought in new signings.

Under Portuguese Football Federation rules, players are prohibited from betting on official matches. If a bet involves a match or competition in which the player himself takes part, he may face a suspension ranging from six months to three years.

At this stage, the players have only been formally charged. They have the right to submit their defense before the federation’s Disciplinary Council issues a final ruling. Record’s report does not state that the players have been accused of deliberately influencing match results.
