West Ham - Chelsea

According to research conducted in the United Kingdom, bookmakers’ logos make a staggering number of appearances, up to 3522 times, during the broadcast of a single English Premier League (EPL) match. A noteworthy observation from the study is that betting operators predominantly choose LED screens surrounding the football field as their prime advertising space. Surprisingly, logos on club jerseys account for only 6.9% of the total number of bookmakers’ logo placements.

To conduct this study, researchers analyzed 10 matches from the previous EPL season involving all clubs. Among these matches, the encounter between West Ham and Chelsea emerged as the leader in the number of bookmaker logo appearances.

Throughout the broadcast of this particular match, bookmakers’ branding was displayed a whopping 3522 times, equivalent to approximately 37 times per minute.

The frequency of these appearances can be primarily attributed to West Ham’s contract with Betway, whose logo is prominently visible on all advertising surfaces at their home stadium and displayed on the front of their jerseys.

On the other hand, the match between Arsenal and Nottingham Forest witnessed the least amount of bookmaker mentions, with a mere 219 occurrences during the entire broadcast. This stark contrast indicates significant variations in advertising strategies and sponsorship arrangements among different clubs and bookmakers.

Overall, the research findings suggest that, on average, the logos of betting companies and online casinos make an appearance every 16 seconds in EPL broadcasts. This frequent exposure highlights the substantial presence of gambling-related advertising in football matches, raising concerns about its potential impact on viewers, especially those who might be susceptible to gambling-related issues.
