Thailand’s House of Representatives has set up a new committee to look into the possibility of legalizing casinos in the country. The committee will have 60 members.
This is not the first time Thailand has considered this option. A previous government had a similar committee that had already drafted some plans for how the casino industry would work.
The new committee has the support of various political parties in Thailand.
Legalizing casinos could be a big boost for Thailand’s economy, as many Thais currently travel to neighboring countries to gamble.
However, it is not clear whether the new committee will follow the old one’s plans or come up with a different vision for the casino sector.
The old committee’s model had these key features:
- Casinos would be part of several (up to 5) resorts in major cities.
- Casinos would take up no more than 5% of the resorts’ area.
- Casinos would be off-limits to anyone under 21 or anyone who made less than $15,000 in the last six months.
