Recorded Future, a top cybersecurity company in the world, has done some research on the hacking activities of RedHotel, a suspected Chinese group based in Chengdu.
The report says that RedHotel has been involved in cyberattacks on information resources in at least 17 countries since 2021, including the US.
Most of the victims are in South and Southeast Asia (such as India, the Philippines, Thailand, Afghanistan, and Vietnam).
The hackers are not only after political, economic, and military data, but also in online gambling platforms. It alleges that RedHotel is supported by and works closely with China’s Ministry of State Security. China is known for its harsh anti-gambling stance.
Recorded Future also warns that RedHotel is just one of many state-backed hacking groups in China. Other cybersecurity firms have found evidence of attacks from other Chinese hackers in countries like Brazil, Australia, and various Western European nations.
